Íslandsbanki

Íslandsbanki is one of the most established brands in Iceland. The bank was a pioneer in the field of digital banking services in its time.

From 2017 to 2019, Kolibri worked with the bank to strengthen its digital presence and services, so that its fresh and friendly service experienced by customers in branches could be fully reflected in digital channels.

The challenge

Perfect Harmony in Digital Branding

The first phase entailed design and development of a new website for the bank. A comprehensive digital brand identity was created by Kolibri’s designers in collaboration with Brandenburg. At the same time, the foundation was laid for a new design system.

The design system was tested across various digital solutions, including a prototype of a new Íslandsbanki app that replaced two older ones. Many ideas were explored during the redesign of the app, but ultimately a validated prototype was delivered. The current mobile app is still built upon this foundation.

Strategy

The entire design process was user-centered and based on collaboration with  staff across departments and disciplines. The website design was continuously tested and refined with input from both users and internal staff.

This work led to the development of a new web strategy, grounded in data on customer and employee behavior and attitudes. Major decisions were subsequently made regarding information architecture and the technical environment. The guiding principle was to simplify content management, make all of the bank’s services more accessible to customers, and speak to people in a more relaxed and human way.

The outcome

The website was launched at islandsbanki.is in January 2019, effectively serving as the debut of the bank’s new digital brand identity. The digital experience had become fresh and modern—aligned with the in-branch experience.

The project is a clear example of strategy execution where the development of a digital brand identity took place alongside key initiatives such as a new website and app. This made it possible to unify previously fragmented digital solutions and create a coherent and consistent user experience.

Since the website launch, Íslandsbanki, in collaboration with Hugsmiðjan, has continued development, refining the website and strengthening its digital services in line with the established direction.
